Hi Laurie,

It looks like your sources.list file, which is used by Synaptic to know
what repositories to use, isn't in the expected format. Maybe it has
been changed by some other application?

I see 2 ways of fixing this.

1 - System -> Administration -> Software Sources
This is a GUI way to editing the file (/etc/apt-sources.list). Try
opening this GUI up and making sure the first entry is valid. Maybe
even try unchecking it. It looks like it will start with the text
"--18:22:06--" or something. If that works, try editing the unchecked
one until it more closely resembles the rest of them (they all start
with either "deb" or "deb-src" FYI)

2 - Edit the file /etc/apt-sources.list manually using Gedit (you'll
need to get root access to save any changes). Look at the first entry
that isn't a comment (again, likely starting with "--18:22:06--") and
edit it until it looks like the others. Once that is done, save it and
open Synaptic again.

Let us know how it goes. If really stuck send us a copy of your
sources.list file

Good luck!

Kirk

Hi
Everyone,Synaptic won't open it has an error.Below is the error.

 E: type '--18:22:06--' is not known on line 1 in source list
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
E: the list of sources could not be read.
Go to repository dialog to correct the problem.
E:_cache->open( ) failed.

I have Hardy running on an older machine,and that is okay.
Unfortunately it hasn't got DVD burner.
 The one I'm having trouble with is a dual boot with Vista.I need this
for my DVD's. I don't know of a way to remove Hardy and re install
without doing Vista all over again.
Would love to get synaptic back. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks Laurie
