In my case it's actually lack of citizenship, plus lack of proximity.
I'm an American who studied briefly in Canada, but have since returned
to the US for the moment, but still follow Canadian affairs and may
return one of these days, but the sentiment still holds.  I actually
tried to get a lawn sign for an MP candidate in the riding closest to
me (Thunder Bay-Rainy River), but apparently they were almost out so
the campaign manager decided they couldn't spare one.  :(  Maybe next
time.  Meanwhile, also talking to my various representatives this side
of the (so far still imaginary) fence.
