problems with video clips.

Good morning,  My name is Ray House and I have been using Ubuntu 8.1 for e few weeks, I cant get the video clips from news sites and youtube , to work. I have asked for help on this in the other forums with no replies. When I try to decode a video the screen darkens and freezes. I seem to have the correct synaptic packages downloaded. I really like Linux and so far this is the only problem that I have, any help will be greatly appreciated,  Thank you.
