Is it just the floppy drive?  If so, have you made sure the device is
still working by swapping it out with another machine or using a livecd?
 Floppy drives are pretty flaky and do sometimes die :)

As for sound, my sympathies.  I've been having strange issues since
going from 8.04 to 8.10, which are resolved temporarily with a reboot
but always come back.
