Dial-Up in 8.10:

Gee all that stuff on Ubuntu Forum looked so helpful, until I started to
make use of it. I spent all day yesterday, with the determination of
finally getting on the Internet about 3 months after getting the 8.10
Ubuntu from England, because of Dial-up issues. Well all the Code Posted
by a person on Ubuntu Forum for setting up Dial up was correct, except
that.... resetting Wvdial.conf after Gnome-ppp is setup causes gnome-ppp
not to work, because gnome-ppp makes use of Wvdial. When Wvdial is reset
to no input, then Gnome-ppp does not work either!

The jist of the help was, that gnome-ppp is so simple to use, that it
requires no explanation at all. It just does not work- that gnome-ppp!
It would connect then disconnect after a few seconds. Doing a some of
Internet Searches, I discovered that gnome-ppp, was being used, since
the early 1990's, when Dial-up modems had Sizzling Baud Rates of 300
Baud or much less, and I was getting 934 bits per second, (but also
slower like 9 bits per second) much faster than that with Wvdial. The
Default settings in gnome-ppp, seemed to be the same, as when it first
appeared, in the 1990's. My Modem was getting hooked up at 14.4 K in
Ubuntu 8.10, with a few tweaks. I can remember I used to get, about 42K
in 6.06.1 LTS. Well in Wvdial I played with the Baud Rate Number,
doubling it, a few times, that didn't do much. So I used gnome-ppp for
hints about what numbers might be, then just took out all the added
figures and used Wvdial instead, because these Utilities are
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DREADFULLY SLOW!

It took most of the rest of the day to download, the Updates to the
Software Sources List, so I could even download gnome-ppp, which took
almost two hours, for that less than 100K of download. So I guess I'll
be having to spend perhaps another whole day on it, searching the
Internet, for tips on speeding up the Dial-Up Modem in Linux, from 9
bits per second I was getting most of the time yesterday, to the almost
56K, I used to get in 6.06-1 Ubuntu.

Does the Init String used by the Modem have anything to do with, what
speed it connects to the ISP?

Hi:
I was looking around the Web to find a good set of plans to install a
Dial up program on Ubuntu 8.10. I went to the Ubuntu Forums Web Site,
and found a very exact plan to use. Setting up Wvdial first and then
being able to connect, Download Gnome PPP and make use of that. In the
Google Search I used there was this other Website ......

Nable.com Someone called Alfred 13 had downloaded to Nable all 214 posts
that I made to Ubuntu-ca at lists.ubuntu.com but calls themselves Alfred
13. I don't remember having a Nable account. I even see posts by Anita
Kuno there. There was a link to Emailing Alfred 13, but I didn't have an
account with Nable. You need to be logged in to use the Link! It looks a
whole lot like This Alfred 13 person Plagiarized all my posts because
they are all signed Alfred 13, instead of my sign!

Alfred!
