Jaunty vs Thunderbird

I'm having trouble with Thunderbird2 in Kub-Juanty
I've posted to both Tbird and Kub-Jaunty>Software fora, but no  
suggestions came back

I run Thunderbird via K > Internet > MozTbird
the password confirmation box comes up, I fill in pwd, it strips mail  
from mailserver, the program icon then disappears from taskbar, and no  
gui ever shows up.  The mail is there (I can see it in webmail, and  
then imported into KMail to confirm that it is being downloaded).   
I've tried running it at cli with no error output showing.

I've solved this a couple of times by remove, purge and reinstall  
TBird, but now that isn't even working.

I don't know what to try next: is there a log somewhere that would  
explain this?

Any ideas?
