video player problems

You can get more descriptive info on why a program crashes by running it 
from the command line.  So from your desktop environment, launch a 
terminal (gnome-terminal is in Applications -> Accessories -> 
Terminal).  From there type the name of the application you want to 
launch, for example "mplayer".

The GUI should appear for mplayer, simply reproduce the crash and see 
what happens on the command line.

Send the info along to see if anyone on the list can help.
