USB mouse continually disconnects and reconnects

Hi all: I have a Logitech optical mouse plugged into a USB port. Evey
so often the LED goes out, and the mouse becomes completely
unresponsive. Sometimes it comes back by itself after a fraction of a
second; sometimes I have to unplug and re-plug the mouse, and sometimes
I have to plug it into a different USB connector.
What causes this, and how can I fix it?
For your reading pleasure, I provide some sample entries from my system
log monitor. I found these under 'kern.log' as well as under 'messages'
and 'syslog'. For these three instances the mouse recovered on its own,
without unplugging/replugging.
This is currently Ubuntu 9.10 (upgraded daily from a Karmic Alpha6
install), but it also happened on earlier versions (8.04, 9.04)
Thanx,
--Bob.
