No sound after upgrade

Just tried that and got the following:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

Do I have to be root or in a specific directory ?

Funny... I just fixed that on my machine...

in  a terminal open 'alsamixer'... chances are the master volume is set to mute... use the 'm' key to unmute it... sound should be fine...

Hi all:

Just upgraded my HP 4100 Workstation to Karmic and lost all sound. The on board Intel sound has worked with 8.10 and 9.04 with no issues.

Using the system testing utility it shows:

0 [ICH5           ]: ICH4 - Intel ICH5

                      Intel ICH5 with AD1981B at irq 17

The other settings are 'Autodetect' although I did try ALSA and OSS in the multimedia settings utility with no success.

Suggestions anyone as to where else I should look ?

thanx,

Bill
