Problem with decompression .tar.gz

I believe that the "generic" package of the kernel is simply a 
meta-package that ensures that you always have the most up to date 
kernel package for your architecture.  Generic just means it will work 
on x86 as well as x86_64 architectures without you having to worry about 
which type your computer actually needs.

If my suspicion is correct, then you should go back to trying to install 
the kernel-specific package rather than the generic one.
