Screensaver problem

Hey Ray....here are a couple of thoughts:

1) is it that the power management is kicking in a putting the computer
in suspend/hibernate before the screen saver kicks in? go to the menu
"system" - "preferences" - "power management" and make sure the times
make sense with your screensaver. also , the next time your computer
goes blank and unresponsive, try hitting some keys, click the mouse or
press the power button to see if it will "wake up"

2) is it an opengl problem with your video card? what king of video card
do you have? are you using restricted drivers? to find out go to
"system" - "administration" - "hardware drivers" and make sure if there
is an available ati/nvidia driver that it is enabled

3) in the screensaver settings, does the preview button work?

it might also be a problem with compiz, but I'd start by investigating
the things I mentioned above

and as a final note I'll throw in a eco-militant bit....don't use a
screensaver....to save energy just have the screen shut of (via power
management)
