I've become a hardcore Drupal fanboy, so that would be my
recommendation.  To get you started, there are two modules I found
right away that provide some sort of RSVP option, namely
http://drupal.org/project/rsvp and
http://drupal.org/project/node_invite , which would handle your
registration aspect.  These would be combined with the Date or Event
modules to give the scheduling in the first place.  There are also
others to create nice calendar views of these things.  You can find a
