the hard drive of the laptop I'm typing this email on has seen every
single release of Ubuntu except 4.10.  Maybe I should install it just
for completeness :)  Then quickly go back to 9.10 which works just
fine on it.

Yes this laptop was the one I had with the Laptop Testing Team circa
2005; it's still working perfectly after all this time.
