Hi Darryl. To use XDMCP to make a connection to the remote system you
should start an Xserver locally This can be an X server connecting to the
video hardware or you can use something like Xnest to start a new X
session 'in a window'.

You can make a direct or indirect query to establish a session under
XDMCP. A direct query is probably what you want. You can do something
like:

Xnest -query REMOTE_SERVER

The remote server has to have an XDMCP aware app like gdm running and
accepting the right sort of request (direct, indirect or both).

Any intervening firewalls needs to allow the XDMCP & X traffic to pass.

HTH.

Cheers,

Rob
