Did we as a community send all the Canadian media press releases about
the new Ubuntu release? Do we send nicely worded letters to the editor,
etc?

There isn't currently a lot of Canadian money coming into Canonical from
what I understand, so this isn't likely seen as a primary market. This
leaves this to the community to help get more people into the community.

The media will write about whatever it thinks the public wants to hear
about. Spin a story for them that will get their interest. I tend to
write things about legally free software every time there is a silly
article about software "piracy" and the alleged (and largely non-existant)
harm to "the" industry.

Note: Even the Mac vs PC stuff bores most people. On the other hand (held
-- sorry for the pun), if you want to talk iPhone, Palm, Crackberry or the
Droid you are looking for -- then there is interest. Desktop operating
systems are so 90's.
