I've always understood that the lm-sensors software was what is used to 
grab CPU and mobo sensor data (i2c bridges).

I've disabled acpi in my boot parameters and don't have the acpi program 
installed, but am able to see both CPU core temps via a Gnome panel applet.

Check out the Community Doc on installing the software [1].  Karmic 
instructions are at the bottom.  It really is very easy to setup.

Report back here if you run into either success or problems.
