Apps greying out

Daniel, the "Check for Updates" menu item is probably grayed out because 
Thunderbird was installed via Ubuntu's repositories rather than 
downloading it from Mozilla directly. You shouldn't need to worry about 
checking for updates for software installed from Ubuntu's repositories, 
the update manager will automatically notify you of any upgrades for all 
software installed, including Thunderbird.
