It's unlikely that Gnome 2 and Gnome 3 can live happily together on
the same system.  To my knowledge there's no backport because of the
amount of work involved.  You'd be better off upgrading.

If you just want to try it, I'd recommend downloading the Ubuntu 11.10
ISO and booting it from a USB key.  If you want to try the default
Gnome shell (instead of Ubuntu Unity interface), you'll need to
install a package called gnome-shell and select that in the log in
screen.
