config editor

Hello all, In my hunt to find out why I have no Login sound, I found on Ask
Ubuntu that I should use Config editor to do some checks, so I downloaded
it from the software center and I don't know if it relevant to 11.10 with
unity, because it does nothing. None of the items in left side of the
window respond. Any ideas? Thank you.    Btw, when I run the machine from
the memory stick all the sounds are there.
