If the camera doesn't show up as a USB mass storage device chances are that
you need software to extract data directly from the camera and not use the
card reader.
best way to check this is to run this in the terminal:
sudo fdisk -l
you should be able to see the card(say it's 32GB) as 32GB in size when the
camera is turned on. if not there might be an option in the camera itself on
the way it communicates via USB (I know my D700 does) look for something
like UMSD or universal mass storage device.
