How to fork?

there was something on howtoforge.com about doing this a while back
just used an existing piece of software to modify the packages on the
livecd(cant remember the name of the software)

* scratch that: google to the rescue.  there's apparently a few of
them that can do that, but its pretty much restricted to package list
modification
