What that means is that the students will still be able to open/save MS
proprietary formats such as doc/docx/xls/xlsx with OpenOffice or Libre
Office. I've used Open Office while taking some Continuing Education courses
at Mac and had no issues with opening/editing instructor-supplied course
materials. With that being said, the institution itself should consider
pushing open document standards. It's cheaper in the long-run (prevents
vendor lock-in) and allows interoperability with other educational
