@Ilija: You wrote: "If it's a new laptop it should run Maverick without
any issues." That statement is false.
A laptop's "newness" is generally NOT an indicator of how well it will
work with Ubuntu. (By the way "Maverick" is the pre-release name for
Ubuntu 10.10, so one shouldn't be running "Maverick" any more, I hope!)
@John: Ubuntu compatibility is normally NOT a function of RAM or CPU as
nearly any modern system will have these resources. In fact, I can show
you *many* systems that have over 2GB of RAM and a very fast dual-core
CPU and still have issues.
Surprised? Don't be. Most hardware incompatibility issues relate to:
wireless chipsets, graphics adapters, and peripherals support. Source:

(We also documentation that validates this chart from Ubuntu Vancouver
tech support events.)
For anyone encountering this thread, if you want a laptop that runs
Ubuntu 10.10 without issue, then either:
1) Buy one that has Ubuntu pre-installed (e.g. http://www.system76.com), or,
2) Buy one that is Ubuntu-certified for Ubuntu 10.10. The complete list
(for all releases of Ubuntu) is here:
http://webapps.ubuntu.com/certification/

Please tell your friends.
