I have an Acer Aspire 3000. It _was_ dropped. I eventually decided that
the HD was toast and got a new one, on which I installed Ubuntu. With an
Ethernet cable, things are fine; without it "wireless is disabled".

Considering that the internal wireless might also be toast from being
dropped, I plugged a NTI wireless-G USB adapter in. Used the .INF file
from its Windows CD-ROM, but still "wireless is disabled", now for 2
adapters.

Don't know how much this might reflect Raymond's experience.
