startup troubles with ubuntu 9.10

1.  which filesystem failed? have you any clue which device or 
partition? /dev/sda1 or some such thing?

2.  at that maintenance shell, try an "fsck" on the device - if you've 
been able to figure out which one. fsck /dev/sda1 for example. it may 
fix whatever is keeping that filesystem from mounting.

3.  you could boot from a Ubuntu LiveCD and then fsck each partition or 
filesystem to make sure there are no errors if you can't figure out 
which is the problem one.

4.  also boot from a Ubuntu LiveCD and use the Disk Utility to check the 
health of your hard drives.
