That IS weird. I too expect all-or-nothing. According to the spec
sheet, the Toshiba P300-ST3014 does not have an SDHC card reader, only
SD. The spec sheet sez:
. 5-in-1 Bridge Media Adapter
o Secure Digital, Memory StickTM, Memory Stick PROTM, Multi
Media Card, xD Picture Card [shared slots]

Sometimes the simplest, fastest solution is to buy an external SD reader:
