You can install via Wubi from any Ubuntu desktop CD.  No USB key required :)

Wubi doesn't require messing with the BIOS, which is a huge win in my
opinion.  There's a tiny additional risk and committment from installing
something to disk, of course, which is why I did specify "more than a
passing interest".  Wubi can be uninstalled from the Windows "Add/Remove
software" menu, though, which makes it pretty darn low-risk.
