Keep in mind you can still use Gnome 2 (the old Gnome panel interface we
know and love) in 11.04.  You don't even need to install anything.  It's a
session option ("Ubuntu Classic Desktop) on login.  Randall "Ubuntu

As for getting drivers that work, that's an eternal struggle.  We've made
great strides, but without support of the hardware vendors themselves, it's
never going to be a wonderful experience.  So buy hardware from vendors that
supports Linux.
