What's the mouse issue?  If it has one of those button-less "clickpads",
I can probably help you get it running.  Do "lsusb" at the commandline
to find the model # of the clickpad.

I wonder if the booting is related to the video drivers.  Alas, my ATI
troubleshooting knowledge is 6 years old.
