Ubuntu Natty 11.04

I'll admit "half finished" might have been a little glib and disrespectful
to those who have put a lot of time into developing unity. Apologies, no
harm meant, we all appreciate the work you do! Consider though, no operating
system or user interface is truly ever finished. Lets just say it is not as
far down the road yet as gnome or KDE. Think of the simplest of
configuration changes to the user interface, taking the launcher and moving
it to another screen edge and resizing it. Can't be done. Ok, with some
googling and some community hacks you can sort of, but there is a serious
lack of GUI tools to control the UI. They will come, as it develops. For me,
it has been really buggy. I put it on a laptop that has been running Ubuntu
since 7.04. This is the first release to not run smoothly. The full screen
mode puts the window under the launcher.. weird.
The whole experience is slow with fits and starts. Flipped over to classic
or KDE, and it is smooth and fast again. I spent a morning just trying to
set it up, but as this is a work machine and I had work to do, I simply
couldn't sacrifice any more productivity to get to know it. I've always run
Kubuntu on my primary home machine, and it is all sweetness and music in
this release..
As a side note, at work I have always had my task bar along the left edge in
windows, including the windows 7 work machine I use. One of my colleges came
in and commented "I see you finally put windows 7 on the laptop"
And, at a cursory glance, unity does look similar in the way I have set-up
windows 7. For some reason that makes me feel a little disappointed.........
