hi Ralph this is John Papineau from Ubuntu kootenay in Nelson BC Canada
. You may want to try to dual boot you computer with Ubuntu Edubuntu
12.04 . I have used this copy with many computer that was not able to
run the main copy of Ubuntu. One of the feature that I like is that when
installing it it will give you the option to install Gnome 3 desktop
that has work better in some of the computers and notebook then the
general copy of ubuntu. The other thing you may want to make sure is
that you load first window then ubuntu . I also found out that sometime
it work better if you partition your hard drive with a windows and a
Ubuntu partition before starting to install windows and Ubuntu. I hope
that this will help you
