Slow 12.04

Rather than gparted I would use the gnome-disk-utility (which might now
be called just "disk", and was formerly called "palimpsest"). It'll give
you the SMART info from the drive, and has a diagnostic tool. I don't
know if that invokes a diagnostic in the IDE firmware or if it's coded
in the gnome-disk-utility software.

Anyway, the result will tell you if the drive has experienced failures,
and if it is expected to fail soon.
