Hi Rob.
You're in luck. I happen to maintain NetworkManager and ModemManager
in Ubuntu (the two pieces of software that are needed for this to
work) and I also happen to have bought a Sierra 330U some time ago.
To have this work on Ubuntu you don't actually need anything special.
Everything comes from bundled on the default install; in fact, you
should be able to access the Internet with such a USB modem straight
from the LiveCD.
However, where things get complicated is when alternate "flavours" of
Ubuntu are concerned -- some of them may decide to not ship the
necessary software, or the graphical interface can be different.
So first; connect your USB device to the computer. You shouldn't have
to do anything else. If a directory pops up, or if a dialog asks you
what you want to do, click any option -- it doesn't really matter, as
the device should be automatically switched to the modem mode (from
the USB drive mode used on Windows to install the drivers) within
seconds.
>From there; look around the top border of your screen for arrows (if
you have a wired connection), or an icon that looks like a pizza slice
(for wireless). Click on that icon, then use the menu available there
to select "New Mobile Broadband (GSM) connection". Follow the steps in
the wizard and you should be ready to go within a few seconds. If it
doesn't connect automatically you might want to get back to the menu
and click on your "Rogers Default" connection to start it.
Please let me know if you get stuck somewhere.
