The power supply could be warmer when the battery is charging because there's a larger current draw to charge the battery.

Really, if you want to know if the laptop is powered from the batter while it's plugged in to the mains, try removing
the battery, plugging the laptop in, and powering it up.  If it turns on, you'll have your answer.
