I know, sadly the monopoly thrives in Skype. :\ I heard that the
communication protocol is encrypted and they won't give the key to it (and I
think that giving that specific key to the encryption does not the decrypt
messages and voice between users).

Up to now, Ekiga <http://www.ekiga.net/> didn't work for me, I was getting a
robotic "Hell~ th~ is a tttttt~" instead of "Hello this is a test" in the
test call. I tried it a while ago, and I noticed that I had to disable the
Video Support, I went in Edit -> Preferencese -> Video > Codecs, and
selected only "theora":

The audio quality went from really low and ugly to really great and useful
:)

As far as I know and read, Ekiga <http://ekiga.net> +
Zfone<http://zfoneproject.com/>(A PGP-like encryption for softphone)
is the open source answer to Skype's
monopoly.
