Kernelimage & Source?!

Hi,

at the last weekend I tryed ubuntu 4.10 and I've to say it's great but there 
are two question still open:

I've installed the system from cd and done a dist-upgrade. now there I've got 
the kernelimage 2.6.8xx but I can't found the headerfiels and sources ford 
that image.
I want to recompile the image, because I want to have the bootsplash while 
booting.

The second thing is, that I don't know where I can change the "gnome"-splash 
image, when booting gnome.

P.S.: Ups hatte vergessen, das dies ja eine deutsche mailingliste ist,aber 
egal, habe keine lust das nochmal zu schreiben... und english sollte eh jeder 
können gell ;)
