Was Du siehst, sind quoted-printable kodierte Buchstaben. Das ist eine 
verbreitete Methode, um 8bit Zeichen (z.B. Umlaute) in E-Mails auf 
7bit Ascii abzubilden. Du mußt also die Ausgabe vorher noch 
QP-decoden. 

In mutt kann man dies mit :set pipe_decode sicherstellen. Oder du 
jagst die Email vorher durch einen Perl-Einzeiler¹ Oder du 
installierst qprint² und läßt die Email vorher mit qprint entsprechend 
dekodieren.

Mit Unicode hat das ganze aber nur am Rande zu tun.

¹) ein perl -MMIME::QuotedPrint -lne 'print decode_qp($_);' sollte 
reichen. Für Debian muß dafür das Paket libemail-mime-encodings-perl 
installiert sein.
Wie das Paket bei Ubuntu heißt, müßte ein apt-cache search 
MIME::QuotedPrint zeigen.
