Booting and login - why are users not logged in automatically?

What's involved in optimizing ureadahead for one task or another?
Do you take an actual list of files that get opened during the
startup process somehow, then turn it into a file list by hand?
Are there tools to help with it?

If someone wanted to go about optimizing ureadahead on their own
system, what would you recommend?
