Laptop Networking, NetworkManager, ifupdown ---> Merge them?

The wiki page currently makes the suggestion for taking netapplet or
something based on that. Is netapplet capable of 802.1x authentication
and/or WPA for wireless links?

WPA/WPA2/802.11i is getting more and more common, so it would be a pitty
if hoary would not be able to get connected to such networks :(

Btw: is there some way for voting for this functionality for the next
release?
