having some automation given that a user has the tarball for the sun or
ibm jdk would be really nice.

one showstopper for the sun jdk (at least for myself) is that there is
no download available for ppc.

fwiw re finding ibm jdk. i googled ibm jdk, clicked the second link (one
with linux in it), which leads to
http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/linux140/

first paragraph has a download link. i agree its confusing because of
the amount of other cruft also there, aka buried in plain sight.
