Funny, I just did install Sarge into an existing LVM partition set. 
One built over md RAID1, in fact.  Granted I wouldn't have wanted to
try it with earlier releases of Debian; dunno about other distros. As
for Windows, no, of course it won't install onto LVM-managed space. 
I'd rather have LVM there to help me clean up the space to carve out a
new partition if I needed to do so, though.

Depends on what sort of desktop.  The kind that MIS comes around and
routinely re-images when things go wrong, sure.
