my firewire drive doesnt showup

I have a NEC 1100A DVD+RW firewire drive but I dont see an icon for it
like I see for my normal CDROM or my Digital camera connected through
USB. 

I also have an external Seagate 200Gb through firewire and same
problem. 

I tail -f /var/log/syslog and plugged the drive in and this is what I
got:
