desktop icons /trash

Hi,

I just installed ubuntu on my machine yesterday. My first impressions
is that it's really great.
Having the Trash applet always visible is practical. I really like that idea.
But for the Computer Menu, I still haven't gotten used to the idea.
I'd rather have a drawer with those, or even have them on the desktop.
If the philosophy is to have as little system icons on the desktop why
is the show desktop button on the panel by default?
