Ah. It's the equivalent of doing an "apt-get dist-upgrade" in a console,
which is to say that apt will be more flexible about removing things that
are blocking upgrades.
It's often necessary in places like Debian sid or Ubuntu's Hoary to use it
as the package structure changes, but hopefully a stable series wouldn't
ever change that much (and Ubuntu certainly seems to be behaving that way)
and the dist/smart upgrade would be left to just cause problems in these
odd cases ;)
