/.dev directory

Hi,


I am new to Ubuntu. Wanted to try out Debian in a more accessible way
;) So far I must say that I like this distribution, not as configurable
as Gentoo but it is nice not to have wait hours before compilation
finishes.

But something distrubs me, I thought that Ubunut would use udev, but
why are there so many files in the /dev or ./dev directory? I thought
that udev would only create files for devices, which do really exist on
my system?

At last on my other systems with Gentoo, there are only a small numbers
of files in /dev.
