That hint doesn't help anybody. You can't say this to an absolute
newbie.
Any time i install Ubuntu on a computer, the first thing i do, is get
rid of all these unwanted packages like hplip, evms, mdadm and so on.
I like Ubuntu very much, but there are to many packages installed by
default that many users will never need. I'm possibly the only person i
know, who is using a logical volume manager for my harddisks. Most
people have only one harddisk in their computer and when they buy a
bigger one, the old disk ends up in another computer. There is absoluty
no need to install lvm2 and evms as default.
The installer should be more intelligent or ask the user more question
about his/her hardware. For example the user should be told to turn on
the printer, so the correct printer driver could be installed at the
time of installation. Or if the user plans to use a dial-up connection
over modem or dsl. If he/she answers no, then there is no need for ppp
or pppoe. Another example is SANE. There are not many people, who own a
scanner, but Ubuntu install SANE as default. If you do not own a
scanner, this package is totally useless for you.
In my opinion, the ubuntu-installer should ask a few more questions,
like these i mentioned above and a bunch of others.
