Rescue-mode

I am reading Mark's latest blogg
(http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/54) where he discuss the
latest weeks problem and big Ubuntu subject the X-problem.

First I must say that when the mistake was discovered I think it was
very well handled. The information was much better than the information
around our friend Microsoft's patch problems.

Well that said, I have some ideas about introducing a rescue mode.
Normally in the linux word, rescue mode means go to single user mode.
This is not good enough in the perspective of the Ubuntu audience.

What about introducing a rescue mode that boots upp in a "single user
mode" but with a simple menu presented. Normally when somting goes wrong
we have to ways to go; either roll pack to previous state or add new
patches.

I thinking about present a menu like this:

Rescue mode
===========

1. Check if any new patches exist to solve your problem.

2. Go back to the system like it was before last update.

3. Check disk status.

It would be nice if we automatically, or by a question, enter the rescue
mode if we notice that the last boot did not work.

This is just a braindump, but what do you guys think about the idea?

Regards,
/Magnus
