It's not only marketing but also Ubuntu being easy to install and having
a great support community, but the marketing surely helps; just go buy
some computer magazines, for some very popular ones targeted at home
users (and I don't mean hobbyists!), Ubuntu was the first linux distro
they ever reviewed.

Ubuntu is targeted at both newbies and professionals, which makes it
possible for you and me to run the same distro that we install on
mom's[1] computer.

[1] "mom" being the proverbial newbie, your mom might be a computer
scientist, I don't know...  ;-)

Whether individual design decisions affect uptake by a certain group is
difficult to find out.
