The arguments themselves not, but the discussion as a whole does. On IRC
it is a lot easier to willingly ignore, unwillingly miss or simply 
misunderstand some lines whereas on a ml the ideas can be more 
coherently exposed and easily understood. Also by being an archived 
discussion it usually makes all participants think more before 
expressing some views thus making these closer to their actual opinions 
rather than to momentary judgments; at least that's how I see it.
