I just realized that you may not know about IRC.

If you are using Ubuntu you will have XChat IRC installed. You can start it 
from Applications > Internet > XChat IRC.

In the prompt type /server irc.freenode.net 
This will connect you to freenode

Then type /join #ubuntu-doc
This will join you to the channel
